Council Tax

Council tax part funds the services that Dumfries and Galloway Council provide to everyone who lives here. Your council tax is a contribution to the overall provision of council services and is not a direct charge based on usage. Council tax is set in bands and is applied to houses based on an examination of the prices of all comparable houses sold around April 1 1991. Your water charges are also included in your council tax figure.

DGHP as a landlord has a duty to inform the council of new tenants and the date they assumed the tenancy of the property. This date then becomes the date that they are liable for council tax from. DGHP supply Dumfries and Galloway Council details of new tenants and termination of tenancies on a weekly basis.

If you are buying a property, solicitors will supply information about new owners and the date they became owners to the council. The council can also request further details from the solicitors for council tax purposes.

Dumfries and Galloway Council always advises that the new occupant of any property should contact them as soon as possible to make sure they are correctly registered for council tax. If the information doesn’t reach the council for six months for example, you will get a backdated bill. The council does not accept ignorance as a reason for not advising the appropriate authority of any changes.

If you have any queries about your water and sewage charges, contact Scottish Water by calling 0845 601 8855 or visit their website here.
