National Insurance
I’m moving back to the UK and my partner doesn’t have a national insurance number, how do we get one?
If you are entitled to a National Insurance number, but don’t have one, you can apply. You will need one in certain circumstances, such as claiming benefits, or applying for a job or a student loan.
Your National Insurance number is your own personal account number. It is unique to you and you keep the same one all your life. Your National Insurance and tax contributions are recorded against your name and it also acts as a reference number when communicating with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
You need to apply for your National Insurance number to Jobcentre Plus on 0845 600 0643. Jobcentre Plus will then arrange an “Evidence of identity” interview or send you a postal application.
At the interview, you will be asked questions about why you need a National Insurance number, your background and circumstances. You will also have to prove your identity. More information is available here.
